Pro Predictor is designed so that it will eventually adjust the power rating for each team to its true power. If a team plays above or below its power rating, the rating will begin to adjust upward or downward until the rating reflects the team's level of play. If a team suffers an injury to a star player, the loss will be reflected in its future games, and Pro Predictor will begin to downgrade the team's power ratings. But this will take time because it is designed not to over-react to a team's unexpected loss or unexpected win. Just because Phoenix beats Washington, it does not mean that Washington should now be ranked on the same level as Phoenix, New England, etc., or that Phoenix should now be ranked with San Francisco and Philadelphia.
So, when a major injury occurs or a star player returns from an injury, we can help Pro Predictor arrive at the correct power rating more quickly by adjusting the power points for that team.
Here's an explanation of the Power Adjustments I've made in PRO 1992. (See Power Adjustments under the View Menu.)
Week 0 Adjustments:
• Philadelphia minus points are due to the death of DL Jerome Brown and the plus points are for the return of QB Cunningham.
• Indianapolis minus points are for the injury to QB Jeff George.
• San Diego minus points are for the loss of the starting QB.
• Seattle minus points are for the loss of QB Krieg through Plan B, leaving them with two inexperienced QB's.
• Detroit minus points covers the loss of two offensive lineman, which has weakened their offensive line considerably since they have not yet come up with adequate replacements.
Those of you have been downloading these weekly updates will note that the Seattle and Detroit adjustments have been recently added. It is now clear that the loss of Krieg has affected Seattle more than at first thought and that Detroit has been unable to fill the loss of the two offensive linemen. Since these should have been entered before the season began, I've entered them as Week 0 adjustments. If I were to enter them as week 4 or week 5 adjustments, Pro Predictor would over adjust their power because it has already made some adjustments to their ratings.
Weeks 2-4 Adjustments:
• Cleveland minus points covers the loss of QB Kosar after week 2.
• San Francisco minus points are for the loss of WR Taylor. Even though Sherrard is an adequate replacement, they now have 2 fast receivers instead of 3.
• Indianapolis plus points mark the return of QB George after week 4.
• Miami plus points after the 4th week are for the acquisition of TE Keith Jackson, considered to be the best TE in football today. Along with Miami's excellent WR's, Jackson should cause defenses problems, especially in the early going.
